book club group discussion

Book Club

Kimmage Manor Book club was formed in 2023.  Reading selection can embrace all literary genres: fiction, biography, travel, history according to the members’ choice.  Discussion is open and friendly and can lead from the book’s theme and characters to its social or historical setting and often to comparison with life today.

Club members are library members and books are reserved by Terenure library and borrowed there.  Many are also available on audio books. The club meets in the Parish Office Meeting Room on the first Thursday of each month at 7pm.  Notice usually appears in the Parish weekly bulletin.

New members always very welcome.

Bridge

The club meets Mondays except Bank holidays and promotes the playing of contract bridge. The start time is 7.30pm, but the participants must be seated by 7.15pm, it finishes between 9.45pm - 10pm.  The group generally plays in pairs so they encourage people to come in groups of two. The Club would love to see more from the parish and beyond getting involved.

Church Cleaning

Just like any home, our parish needs good housekeeping. For this very purpose, the parish has a group of volunteers who keep the church clean and tidy - God’s housekeepers!  The group meets every second Friday after the 10am Parish Mass to clean the church.  The cleaning is followed by a cup of tea and a chat.  New members are always welcome.

Community Building Team (CBT)

In our Community Building Team we have a twofold mission:

1. To be of practical help and support to existing community/social events and activities held by the parish community.

2.  To act as a ‘think tank’ to find new community/social ventures which reach those in our parish who are not served by existing functions or feel alienated in any way.

We are always open and eager to hear new ideas, and everyone is welcome to come and join us at our monthly meetings, which are noted in the weekly bulletins.

Recent examples of the fruit of this committee are:

AED/CPR – Defibrillator;

Book Club;

Cuppa after Mass on the 1st Saturday & Sunday of the month;

Fundraising events;

Le Chéile (support to the LGBTQ+ Community);

& Parish Social Evenings.

Environmental Group

The Environmental group currently comprises about 10-12 people who have come together in the Parish on a monthly basis to promote individual behaviours that can, when all added together, help address issues such as Climate Change, ongoing challenges to Pollinators, and to promote Biodiversity. We continue to have a lot of support from the clergy in our parish, who are represented in the Group, and we communicate primarily through the church newsletter and the noticeboard at the bottom of the church. The Mission of our group is guided by the Church document ‘Laudato Si’. We continue to promote positive behaviours supporting Biodiversity, both on the Church grounds - like the wildflower patch, birdboxes, and nature-friendly mowing cycles - and in our own homes, gardens, and behaviours. We are always looking for volunteers to help out with this important work.

  • Marginalized Groups within our local community and in the wider global World

  • Maintenance and upkeep of the church facilities

Examples of fundraising in the last few months include:

  1. Our annual Duck Race, we raised funds for Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and their work in Gaza.

  2. Templeogue College Band & the Defence Forces No. 2 Band recently performed to a packed audience to raise funds for ongoing church maintenance.

Le Chéile

The Le Chéile (Together) group wants to bring the whole issue of our parish’s welcome to and inclusiveness of our own LGBTQ+ parishioners and their families out into the light. We want to make the church a place where they can feel safe, be heard and respected, without being judged. Because it is an area that has not been openly talked about in parishes up till now, (to the best of our knowledge,) we do not have a template as to how our group should proceed. We are in uncharted water. We meet and talk openly about our experiences and hopes for the future, and we pray that, with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we can discern the way forward. Our group is looking for new members and welcomes even greater diversity to join us on our journey

We have called our group “Le Chéile” as we wish to walk along with the LBGTQ+ community.

Maintenance Team

The Parish Maintenance Team considers proposals for repairs and maintenance of Parish buildings and facilities.  They employ suppliers approved by the Spiritan Congregation to perform tasks, e.g. heat maintenance, roof/leak repairs, etc.  These tasks are approved and carried out on a priority basis due to the availability of limited funding.  The members of the team perform from time-to-time different tasks, e.g. painting, cleaning/power washing pathways surrounding the church.

Safeguarding

'Safeguarding' means the action the Church takes to promote a safer culture in all our churches.  In order to achieve this we do a lot of hard work. We promote the welfare of children, young people and adults. We will work to prevent abuse from occurring.

All vulnerable people have a right to be protected against abuse and to have any concerns regarding abusive experiences addressed.  They have a right to be treated with respect and to feel safe, regardless of the setting.

The Parish Safeguarding Officers are the key link between the diocese and the parish/s, concerning safeguarding matters.  She/he will have an overview of all church activities involving children, young people and vulnerable adults and will seek to ensure the implementation of the safeguarding policy.

Safeguarding means protecting a citizen’s health, wellbeing and human rights; enabling them to live free from hard, abuse and neglect.  It is an integral part of providing high-quality health care. Safeguarding children, young people and adults is a collective responsibility.

From time to time updating on the different policies in relation to Safeguarding in our Parish takes place at a diocesan level.

The Safeguarding Officers for our parish are Linda & Dan Ahern

Saint Vincent de Paul

ST. Vincent de Paul ( St. Martin's Conference)

St. Vincent De Paul is an international charitable organisation founded in 1833 and is now based in over 150 countries. They first came to Ireland in 1844, 180 years ago, and are now firmly established throughout the 32 counties. There are in excess of 10,000 members in Ireland, based in local groups called conferences.

The conference based in Kimmage Manor Church is St. Martin’s Conference, and consists of seven members from diverse backgrounds, but united in helping those who have fallen on hard times. The Conference actively supports those in our own area facing poverty and disadvantage.

Every two weeks, the Conference meets to review the requests received for assistance, decide on a course of action and support, and call the people concerned in teams of two. Usually, assistance is provided by way of Dunne Stores vouchers, and more recently Payzone Energy Vouchers. If appropriate, more specialist assistance from MABS (Monetary Advice and Budgeting and Service) and/or Citizen Information Centre is recommended, depending on the circumstances.

Education is very important as a means to exit poverty. Assistance can be given at both conference level and regional level for 3th level education  and apprenticeships. The help given in this area is wide-ranging, and is designed to assist an individual in furthering their education.

Once a month, and usually in the middle of the month, there is a collection outside Kimmage Manor Church for St. Vincent De Paul. The amount collected  each month goes directly to St. Martin’s Conference, and is used to help those in need in our own area. Even the major national collection in early December each year goes directly to St. Martin’s Conference, to go toward the substantial  help given each Christmas to families and individuals in our area.

If any help or assistance is required, contact should be made to the Head Office, phone no. 01 884  8200, or  the website   SVP.IE

New members are always welcome. If interested, please contact the Head Office

Visitation to the
Housebound & Sick

A team of five parishioners visit the housebound in their homes on a monthly basis (except August), in nursing homes, or in hospital.  Each person visited has the opportunity to receive Communion or the Sacrament of Confession.  The team recognises that such visits enrich the life of our parish.

If you know of anybody who would benefit from such a visit, please contact the parish office @ 01-4064377 (office hours) or email: kimmagemanorparish@gmail.com
